A Little About Me

People often ask how I got into baking and cake decorating. They assume I grew up baking with my mom, grandmother etc. but no, my mom, bless her heart, is a box mix kinda baker. It was 2012 and I dropped the ball on ordering a cake for my mom. After calling every bakery in town for a last minute banana cake (her favorite) I eventually gave up and decided to bake it myself. Only one problem, I’d never baked anything in my life but how difficult can it be, right? Well the cake turned out fantastic and I absolutely fell in love with my new addiction.

I have a degree in Anthropology with a minor in Photography and as a person with a Liberal Arts/art background, I struggled to find my passion in the real world. Back in the good old days before photography went digital, there were dark rooms and dangerous chemicals required to make works of art.

I always loved the science behind photography and the tranquil element of being immersed in the dark room. The tactile aspect of holding film and paper and splashing around in trays of “magic” liquid, waiting for a print to develop was exhilarating.

Once the digital age took over, I lost interest in photography. I realized that I really enjoyed working with my hands and the traditional process of developing film and photographs.

Baking and caking allowed me the creative outlet I desperately needed to feed my malnourished soul and what started as a hobby quickly grew into a business. In early 2016 I left the corporate world and started Meraki Cakes & Bakes which has now become Meraki Custom Cakes.

Thank you for visiting and I hope to work with you soon.
